About Bob

Bob's pictureBob Olsen is now retired from a career in commercial radio broadcasting where he worked as an announcer, on-air personality, program director and consultant. During a career spanning three decades he worked at stations: KECC, WLRC, WQDC, WSVC, WBCM, WTRX and WFDF.

Bob is a re-tread ham radio operator. First licensed as a Novice in 1967, his original call sign was WN8YHT.

Bob served seven terms as the Chairperson of the Genesee County Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Incorporated’s Board of Directors and was their Director of Special Projects for ten years. GCARES is a 501(c)(3), tax exempt, not-for-profit, organization. It was founded in 1978 by local Federal Communications Commission licensed Amateur Radio operators. Its stated purpose is to “provide emergency communications for public assistance in time of need, or, distress.”

He has held the ARRL appointments of:

  • ARES Assistant Emergency Coordinator (AEC)
  • Official Emergency Station (OES)
  • Public Information Officer (PIO)

In the 1990’s, Bob was a founding member of the Great Lakes Amateur Radio Rovers (GLARR), a Field Day, contesting and Special Event Station club. He served as their “PR Weasel and Site Acquisition Mooch”.
