Coincidently, the 2.4 GHz (IEEE 803.11 standards) Wi-Fi band of frequencies used for making remote network connections to the Internet, falls into the frequencies also assigned for the use of the Amateur Radio Service. When the frequencies are used in our service, none of the FCC’s Part 15 restrictions on 802.11 Wi-Fi apply. One of those restrict
ions is in the area of the use of high gain antennas.
The DXzone Web site has collected 71 links to information about building high gain antennas that cover 2.4 GHz. When you consider the low cost of Wi-Fi hardware — due to the economy of scale — you can see why this is an area of ham radio experimentation that cam be pursued on a limited budget. If you will excuse me, I am going to play with my Linksys WRT54GL router now.
