d-star_logo Hoo, boy! Here is a way to combine two of my favorite pastimes, ham radio and Web surfing. Chris Matthieu, N7ICE, demonstrates how to surf the Web via an Icom ID-1 D-STAR radio in his latest HamBrief.TV video at 73s.org.

The D-STAR digital mode currently has nearly 10,000 registered gateway users worldwide. It, therefore, is definitely deserving of your notice.

Hams may be pulling their collective hair out over the legal ramifications of all this for a while yet. The FCC’s inability to effectively monitor all that digital traffic aside, and however cool the concept of Web surfing via ham radio may be, it seems to be limited by law at this time to only occasional emergency use.
