Scanrecorder under Shackbox screenshotI just received an e-mail from FØFAK who says that a new release candidate (b0.1.5) of his Linux based Amateur Radio Operating System is now available. I haven’t tried it yet, but intend to do so soon and will file a report.

Have you ever been curious about running all al those ham radio applications that are only available on the Linux platform? No problem, just insert a DVD in your Windows machine and boot to the Ubuntu flavor of Linux running Shackbox. Shackbox is a live DVD  for ham radio operators, or radio scanner users, that offers more than 150 software applications related to radio.

Called by its designer, “the tool box for ham radio operators”, Shackbox is a simple as it gets. Just download the ISO image, burn it to a blank DVD, put it in your computer, re-boot, enter the default  username herve and the password shackbox and you are done.

There is nothing to install on your local hard drive and there are no partitions to create. If you chose, you can make a permanent installation on your computer.

With Sackbox you can:

- Design, calculate and model antennas
- Control rigs
- Trunk scanner resources
- Simulate an oscilloscope
- All the tools for designing your own PCB
- Sound capture and editors

Their server is a bit overworked just now, so you might have to wait a day or so for the demand on bandwidth to lessen.

    http://shackbox.net/linux-ham-.....-shackbox/

    comments appreciated

  3. The preview of the new version looks very impressive. A lot of work has gone into this project.

  4. Wish I could get a copy of this. The most that I have been able to dl is 19mb, then the DL will terminate. Is here a torrent or another DL location?

  5. You might want to check your ISP’s traffic limits. The Shackbox server seems to be running slow, but sure for me.

I have so far DL’ed over 110 meg of the Carbon Stable Edition ISO from http://shackbox.net/downloads/ at a blistering <100 KB/sec. Sorry, I could not find a torrent either.

  6. Checked this morning to find that all 2,646,074 KB had transferred OK.

  7. Just d/l’ed Carbon - whats the user name and password the ones above don’t work !

  8. If website traffic is an issue, why not seed the ISO as a Torrent? This will save bandwidth and will speed up downloads. The torrent file would only be a few kilobytes. And with 3 or 4 people initially starting the seed process, people would be able to download it much faster and wouldn’t strain the hosting server. This would also eliminate the need for the $5 fee to download the ISO. Which I don’t understand since Linux is GPL and selling it, is against the GPL license.

  9. hi,
shackbox is back with a new version and free unlimited access.
    all ppl have been refund.
To make it correct, shackbox has always been free, bbut access to it was for member with a pay membership.
you can download it 50000 times you wouldn t get charged for download.
why i ve charged?it was for the support, like some linux disto do, so no violation of gpl.
now it s back as it was for start, at the difference, i don t provide any help or support anymore, cause my time is worth more than 0$ 73

  10. Need to get up a P2P Torrent of this, Release Candidate, plus, the prior Stable Release!

Let me know, as I host some Linux and FOSS torrents, by demand, until demand stops! Patrick, KJ4JTK
