The official audio recordings from the Fire Department of New York’s radio dispatches on September 11, 2001 are now available for download as part of the public record. They include individual files for several radio channels.
I have hesitated in posting this because listening to the material is so distressing to me. However, there are lessons to be learned by emergency communicators from careful analysis of the recordings. Learn from what went well and, perhaps more importantly, learn from what went wrong with the comms. Also, please remember the rescue workers who are, in some cases, still waiting for their government to live up to its rhetoric and treat their health problems which were acquired while they were acting as what it called “heroes”.
The recordings, which were surpressed until 2005, are available as 128Kbps MP3, Ogg Vorbis and 64Kbps MP3 compressed audio files at archive.org.
