We received our first snowfall of the season today. OK, it is pretty. Now make it go away until next year.
Every year I am less thrilled when I contemplate the joy of winter. Snow shoveling, scraping ice off car windows, frozen pipes, etc. My brother got so fed up with Michigan winters that he drove south until he found a town where they could handle all their snow disposal problems with only a pickup truck with a blade on it, and then moved in. That story is aounding better to me each year.
Earliest Measurable Snowfall at Both Detroit & Flint
Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 04:30 PM
Snow showers and snow squalls associated with an unusually cold core low pressure system over the Great Lakes has brought the earliest measurable snowfalls to both Detroit and Flint.
Detroit’s earliest measurable snow had been October 13th, 1909 when 0.4” of an inch fell in a very similar type storm that brought an unusually early blast of winter-like weather. It also snowed on the 12th in 1909 but only a trace fell. Officially at Detroit Metro Airport up through 330 PM EDT today /12th/, 0.2” of an inch of snow fell in quick bursts of snow.
At Flint, 1.6” inches of snow has fallen and this wiped out the old official earliest measurable record of 3.5” on October 19th, 1989.
At this time, convective type snow showers and squalls continue to blast through the region, so more snow amounts are possible.
